There is a general belief that "certain keywords pay highly" (granted), like bankruptcy, cancer, lawyers etc., but without research to back them up, such a belief does not stand on a foundation.

Google does not take from AdWords advertisers the maximum bid price they put in their account; this is important to recognize. For example, the first-placed ad may have a max. bid of $12, but the max. bid of the second-placed ad stands at only $2. The top advertiser does not always have to fork out $12 to maintain his ad in first place. Google Advertising works such that it has a sliding scale for the bidding process.

In other words, you bid on the keyword 'bankruptcy' and you decide that it is only worth $1.95 but you are willing to pay up to $12 against your competition. Then one day, your closest competitor's bid is $2. Google will ante up 6 more cents on your behalf to keep you in the top position and continue to do so for as long as you can afford up to $12. Google sets these special perimeters when they set the account up for that keyword.

That means Google can only pay AdSense publishers as much as the next highest existing bid price. Then again, as you do your keyword research, Google only shows average CPC as the real numbers change dynamically. So it is crucial for publishers to appreciate the bid pricing gap between 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th-placed bidders to make an educated guess of how much they will be paid for certain AdSense ads.

With all that being said, AdSense is very much alive and well. The AdSense program is just an attractive incentive to make AdWords advertisers happy that their ads will be spread out with the help of publishers. Google Inc. can take down AdSense; it's their choice, but it's not helpful. Honestly, it's the publishers' fault that they abuse the system so the company fine-tune it...meaning, make sure the distribution of earnings is better deserved and justified to esteemed publishers.

I got seriously MAD, sad, overwhelmed etc, at that conversation, but my income has more than doubled since I had it with my husband.

2. Create a plan of action. If you have no idea what you are doing, that 's ok. Look around, read blogs ~ medium level blogs like mine or PotPieGirl, we are real people and we are here not only to make money ourselves, but to help others do it too.

When you find a blog you connect with follow what that person is doing! Email the writer, or post comments on the blog to get more clarity on the points you don't understand.

Join the mailing list. Good bloggers will provide you with quality information on their list. Others will just send you email after email recommending products for you to buy. Join the list for whatever it is you are going to get for free. If after that time you do not continue to get useful information ~ get off the list. You won't be missing anything, in fact, you'll probably be keeping a lot of money.

3. Have a clear and focused goal. You can set your goals around your plan.

What your goals are is completely up to you. I suggest you create SMART goals. Specific. Measurable. Achievable. Realistic. Timely. Setting your goals with these factors in mind will keep you moving forward, and will also allow you to achieve ongoing success and momentum.

I know I have to complete it by the end of May, and it is a completely realistic and achievable goal. If I had set the goal for 25 lenses in a month ~ that would be setting myself up for failure, at least right now, it would not be very realistic in the first month of building lenses for others ~ you see? However, a few months down the road that may be a very reasonable goal. You don't want to sell yourself short, but you don't want to go too high. I'd rather error on the side of less, than more, because at least you can celebrate accomplishing the goal. If you go over, you now have an idea for an even BETTER goal for next month.

Having set this goal, I know I will need to focus on activities that will help me acquire new clients. This will keep me on track.

Setting goals and having a plan can really get you on the right track. With internet marketing and all the free information available online it is so easy to find yourself running around in circles, and not getting anywhere. Believe me, I know, I did it for at least a year.

You can overcome this by deciding exactly what you want to do to make money online, create a plan, set some goals and then GIVE IT YOUR ALL! Don't give up. Because failure can NOT be an option.

Online success is possible for everyone, you just can't quit. Here 's something that happened to me recently.

I realized I had jumped around got off track. When I got back on track I looked around and wondered, where would I be today if I hadn't gotten sidetracked? I probably would have been a lot further than I was, however, I did gain some learning and that counts for something. I was still in the game.

I will just come out and say it. Pay-per-click is the most frustrating, pointless, bone-headed form of internet marketing known to man . Most websites use at least some pay-per-click to attract traffic to their site. Other sites use nothing but pay-per-click to attract traffic to their site. I, on the other hand, detest it. I hate paying for clicks and I have modified my internet marketing strategy accordingly.

What is pay-per-click (PPC), you ask? Well, go to Google, and then type in a keyword or phrase that you want to search for. Then, at the top of the search results, you will see a section for what is called sponsored links or sponsored results. These sponsored links are paying a certain cost per click to be listed in this special section at the top of the listings. Each one of these websites pays a certain fee to Google each time someone clicks through to their site.

Each website that uses PPC has to place a bid on how much they are willing to spend per click for a certain keyword. The highest bidder is placed in the number one position, the second highest bidder is placed in the number two position, and so forth. Also, each bidder specifies how much they are willing to spend per day. Once their daily budget has been exhausted, the clicks stop until more money is added to the account.

Google is not the only search engine that has a PPC service available. Overture also has a service, as does Miva, and several others. Each service is tied to different search engines. If you go with Google, your website will be listed on Google, AOL Search, and Ask Jeeves. If you sign up for Overture, you will be listed on engines such as Yahoo, MSN, Netscape, and several others. Miva is tied to approximately 6 different search engines.

The costs are expensive, especially if you are bidding on a highly sought after keyword or phrase. Keywords related to auto insurance, or mortgage quotes, can cost anywhere between $1 - $20 per click or even more if you want to be ranked in the top position. If the keyword you want to advertise for is not too popular, the click costs will be much less. Usually, doing pay-per-click will boost your Google PageRank by 1 (PageRank is scored on a scale of 1 to 10), but it certainly has never actually helped me get anywhere near the first page of Google.

It is possible to spend thousands dollars on clicks and make zero sales of the product or service you are selling. Conversion rates are usually 1%-3%, meaning that only 1%-3% of the people who come to your website will actually order what you are selling. So, you need to take that into account when developing your marketing strategy.

The problem with PPC advertising is that most people using a search engine are only looking for information, and are not planning on buying any products or services. So, you can spend tons of money to get clicks, but you will likely only convert 1% - 3% of those clicks into sales, and sometimes you will get absolutely zero sales.

I am not saying that the search engines do not bring business to your site. They absolutely do. That is why it is good to achieve a high ranking on the search engines within the free part of the listings. Even though you will still only convert a small fraction of your visitors into paying customers, at least you are not wasting money on every single click. So, getting to the top of the search engine listings without having to pay for each click is paramount for your online business.

PPC advertising is not necessarily inappropriate for every online business. If you are selling an expensive item ($100 or more), you can turn a profit as long as your per-click costs are somewhat modest. But generally speaking, you will spend more than you will make.

The only time PPC is truly helpful is for businesses that sell a service where a recurring fee is involved. For example, dating websites charge their customers a recurring monthly fee to be a member of their site. So, if you own an online dating service, it makes sense to use PPC and not worry about losing money on attracting new customers, because if they stay members for the second month, you will be able to charge them again, thus making your website profitable. If they stay members for a year or more, then you really come out ahead.

You need to have a lot of cash to burn in order to compete with the bigger businesses who are spending thousands of dollars per month for their clicks. If you are operating a small business, you need to diversify your internet marketing efforts by optimizing your website and increasing your link popularity so you can climb to the top of the search engines without having to pay for every click you receive.

Also, you should consider having an affiliate program so that other websites will promote your business for free as long as you pay them a commission for any referrals they produce. The best way to approach internet marketing is to use several different methods that when put together result in an optimal cost situation for your business and attract a significant amount of targeted traffic to your website.

What if I told you that all the links in your site that point to your homepage (i.e. the "default" page) of your domain are doing you more harm than good? That would sound pretty silly wouldn't it? Well, in many instances, those links are doing just that.

Before I go any further, let me explain exactly what a homepage link is for anyone who happens to be new to web promotion and web design. A "homepage" link is a link that goes the main page of your website. You know, the one that comes up automatically if you just type in your URL.

So if your domain name is www.example.com then your homepage is the page that comes up when I visit that URL.

The server is setup to return a specific page as the "default" page when no actual page name is referenced in the URL. This "default" page is often "index.html", "default.htm", or something similar, but could be virtually anything. When no page name is referenced, the server returns the content of this page.

Ok..so now that everyone knows what a homepage link is, I hear you asking "John...how can links to my homepage be bad?". So I'll answer. If done correctly, a homepage link is generally a good thing. The problem is that a huge percentage of the homepage links I see on the sites that I analyze are done incorrectly.

Instead of the homepage link pointing to the actual domain, the link is pointing to the actual default page such as "index.html", "default.html", etc.

For a more visual example:

Instead of the homepage link pointing to "www.example.com" it is pointing to "www.example.com/index.html". Now, the content that is served up at both of the above URLs may be identical, but they are both technically different URLs and they are generally treated as such by the search engines.

So, how can this potentially hurt you? Well, you have to remember that one fo the biggest factors in how well a particular URL ranks in the search engines is the link popularity of that page. In the above example, there are two distinct pages each with their own link popularity.

Most people when linking to your site, will link to your homepage/domain name, i.e. "www.example.com", but if internally in your site, when linking to your homepage, you linked to "www.example.com/index.html" then you are effectively splitting that pages potential link popularity between two different URLs.

The end result of this is often that your homepage never ranks as high as it could.

The bad news is that this is extremely common. The good news is that it is relatively easy to fix. Just go through your site and look for all of your homepage links to make sure they are linking to your main domain and NOT to a specific page.

If you find links incorrectly pointing to the actual page instead of the domain, change them and eventually, the engines will pick up the changes and you will likely find that your rankings will improve.

There are additional things that you can do to further speed up the process, but unfortunately, they are dependent on what type of server your site is running on and a bit beyond the scope of this article (but generally fairly easy to setup if necessary).

Ok...so there you have it. A quick and easy to fix a problem that can have potentially big effects on your site 's ranking. Now...go fix it!

22. Don't spam forums.
Don't comment just to add a link in to your signature. Forums are great for building your authority in your niche, but behave as a helpful expert, not a low-level sleaze.

Also, keep in mind that some forums disable signature links, while you have to earn them by posting helpfully and gaining authority within the forum.

23. Use 301 redirect urls excessively.
Used in moderation this can be very effective, but do you really think 300 redirects to your site look natural?

24. Don't send annoying updates.

Successful pay per click management depends on testing a number of variables to determine the optimum strategy for your company. Doing what someone else is doing probably won't work. Every business is different. Every marketing message is different. Every potential customer is different. To maximize the effectiveness of your campaigns you need to manipulate the following seven variables, trying different things for each until you find the right mix.

1. Bids. You might think that the number one spot on a search engine results page will yield the best results, and you might be right...or you could be dead wrong. We have seen numerous occasions when, while looking at keyword performance at various positions, the second or third (or even lower) position maximized our traffic. You won't know what your best position is until you try different levels of bids, which will place your ad in different positions (all else being equal), and then look at the performance data to see which positions generated the most clicks or conversions.

2. Keywords. What you are probably going to find is that there is a small set of keywords that generates most of your traffic. Those keywords are also probably your most expensive ones. You need to constantly expand the keywords in your campaign, trying to find the ones that generate leads at less cost, even if they produce far fewer of them.

3. Ad copy. The secret to discovering what ad copy works best can be boiled down to three words: testing, testing, testing. That 's not just the secret to writing paid search ad copy - it 's the secret to writing any advertising copy for your business. You should run multiple ads for all of your ad groups. Then periodically turn off the ones that are not performing and create new ads that are slightly different from the ones that are working.

4. Landing page copy. The same secret applies here. You could argue that landing page copy is more important than ad copy. If the visitor has already clicked your ad and arrived at your site, then you've already paid for the visit. So this is where you have to make your money. The only way to know what landing page copy will generate the most conversions is to split-test different pages. To do that, all you have to do is create duplicate ads that link to the different pages. You also need to make sure that you have conversion tracking scripts in place. If you don't know which pages generated sales or leads, then it 's a pointless exercise.

5. Search engines. Google is the king of paid search, with Yahoo! a reasonably close second, but there are many more options. Microsoft still doesn't have nearly as much search traffic as the top two search engines, but it is constantly adding new features to its search marketing platform and doing everything it can to catch up.
